Who ELSE knows where your guns are stored?
Can you imagine the reaction of your firearms licensing department if you told a perfect strangerthat you had guns at home, and gave him your name and address? I suggest that they would be V
ERY unhappy with you for this breach of security.
Well, it seems that some firearms licensing departments are doing this for us.
We have been told that the Met, Sussex, Gloucestershire, Hampshire and West Yorkshire Police (and perhaps others) are sending letters to your doctor's surgery to tell them when you have a certificate granted
or renewed.
This means that doctors, receptionists, nurses, practice managers, clerks cleaners etc in your surgery will have access to the information that you have guns at home, and will know your name
and address.
Worse, the letter states that "this means that they [the certificate holder] may have more or less immediate access to firearms and ammunition." This statement is guaranteed to cause
concern amongst those who have little or no knowledge of our sport.
Did the police tell you they were going to do this, did you give your permission to do this?
There is a world of difference in your allowing your GP to give information to the police should they need it, (you sign to allow that on the application form)
and the police giving information to the surgery - you didn't sign up for that.

Did YOU know?
... that it is a criminal offence not to sign your firearm or shotgun certificate in ink the moment you receive it?
IT IS - YOU MUST!
Free, easy-to-use website for clubs - let's get shooting clubs in there!
The CLUBBZ website listing is a free, very simple and effective way of providing a website for shooting clubs that don't have their own.
It really is easy to administer, and is well-featured, and even if you already have a club website this can link to it as well.
This is a way of providing much-needed publicity for our sport, as well as putting us among the "normal" clubs of the UK.
I've seen plenty of similar offerings, but this one is one I really can recommend - and I've no vested interest in it either, in case you were wondering. :-)
Please rate our club
(13/1/11) - I've added our club details to the UK club website which is at -
THE PSA Clubbz entry
If you'd like to visit, you can also write reviews of your experiences of Phoenix - good and bad. I've also added several pictures that might amuse you.
This is another way of keeping the profile of target shooting as high as possible, both nationally and locally -
Please feel free to visit and rate the club.
MoD RANGES - THINGS YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO KNOW
(9/3/11) - A series of facts which are now required knowledge for anyone using a military range for
target shooting.
THINGS WE'LL NEED TO KNOW - is a series of notes taken from the MoD/NRA Safe
Shooting System course, which is needed for the "Competency Certificate." If you want to shoot on MoD Ranges, you'll have to have this certificate unless you are shooting under 1-1 supervision.
To obtain this certificate you'll have to successfully complete the course and undergo an assessment. We're sorry about this, and believe me it's neither of our making or wishes,
so we will help any member as much as possible.
I'll be updating it as things change, but if you find anything in it you believe needs
clarifying, please let me know through our Contact page and we'll do our best to help.
Airgun law from - 10th February 2011.
(19/1/11)- The law relating to keeping airguns secure from people under 18 took effect on effect 10th February.
I've extracted both the main points and the guidance from the Home Office at:
The Crime And Security Act - Airgun section which, if you're an airgunner, you should take the time to read, as it affects YOU.
Interesting test of .22RF ammo
(26/12/10)
There's an interesting website dedicated to accurate re-loading at "Accurate re-loading" surprisingly!
Oddly, (because this is a site dedicated to re-laoding, and you can't easily re-load rimfire ammunition) there's also a very useful test at
.22 rimfire ammo test which shows the results of 54 different makes of .22 RF ammunition at 50 yards.
At the top are the most accurate rounds going down to the most (relatively) innaccurate at the bottom. The average group size is printed over the bottom middle target.
We have Graham Gibbs to thanks for searching this out!
HOW MANY PEOPLE SHOOT IN ENGLAND & WALES?
(07/10/10)
Well, you'd think the Home Office would be able to tell us, wouldn't you?
In fact, they can't. They can tell us how many certificates there are, but some people have one, others two. They
can tell us how many visitors permits were issued, or how many Registered Firearms
dealers there are - but they have never been able to tell us how many people actually
regularly enjoyed our sport!
The answer is - in England and Wales at least - 598,397.
This information has just been provided to me by the National Policing Improvement Agency, and was correct at 30th September 2010.
The figures are further divided up into police areas, which is a helpful marketing tool for shooting organisations.
For twelve years I've been trying to get accurate, up-to-date figures from the Home Office of the number of legal shooters - well now we know.
You'll not find these figures anywhere else yet - remember you saw it here first!
Incommoded? Not us!
(12/10/10)
It's interesting to see that if you add up all the shooting sports related accidents reported over the three year period at
The RoSPA Accident site
they STILL don't reach the number of accidents involving commodes and chamber pots!
Perhaps the term "accident" is differently defined for these? :-)
The classifications used for shooting sports accidents were - Airgun or pistol, Bullet, Clay Pigeon thrower, Other real gun, Other shooting equipment eg:target, Pellet,
Pistol, Rifle, Shot, Shotgun, Unspecified bullet, pellet or cartridge, Unspecified gun. Over the three years (2000-2002) there were 18,019 accidents involving these items.
For Commodes etc the classes were - Chamber pot or commode, Child's potty. There were 39,624 accidents reported over the same period.
"The Shooting Sports"

Shooting: The Sport: The Facts
A video by The Shooting Sports Trust, well worth encouraging people who are NOT shooters to see this video.
Are you satisfied with our sport? It looks like it.
(26/08/10)
Sport England have just published their "headline" figures from a survey many of us participated in earlier in the year.
It's interesting to see that shooting was the sport which gave the third-most satisfaction to participants in England - WELL above the average.
OK, it's something we've felt for a long time, but now it has been measured against 44 other sports, and come out in the top league.
Many thanks to everyone who took part - it's another way to demonstrate to the world what we know, but they don't: that our sport is safe,
fascinating and provides us with a great deal of satisfaction!
You can see the headline results - and the detailed results from 2009 at Sport England's Sport satisfaction survey results.
R U 17 ?
(29/07/10)
From 28th July 2010 you cannot buy or hire a firearm or shotgun until you are 18 years of age.
A European Law Directive came into effect in England, Wales and Scotland that raised the age from 17 to 18, and you can read the details at the
BASC Website.
A message from Bill Wiggin MP for shooters.
Bill Wiggin MP is a vice-chairman of the British Shooting Sports Council, and he's
penned this article for use by the shooting organisations. It's
WELL worth reading - by EVERY shooter.

OF INTEREST TO EVERYONE IN THE UK (22/04/09)
Home Office Figures
THE CRIMINAL SHOOTER - ENGLAND AND WALES
Deaths and injuries caused by the illegal use of guns (excluding airguns.)
1969 - - - - 173
1988 - - - - 410
2008/9 - - - 1,764
THE LEGAL SHOOTER - ENGLAND AND WALES
Certificates for the legal use of guns
1988 - - - - 1,037,400
2008/9 - - - - 713,674
CRIMES INVOLVING THE USE OF HANDGUNS
1988 - - - - 1,484
1998/9 - - - 2,687
2008/9 - - - 4,275
SO..... deaths and injuries from armed crime have quadrupled,
whilst legal ownership has been reduced by 1/3rd.
Pistols have been banned from legal use for most practical purposes, (reduced by around 98%) whilst the criminal use of pistols
is getting close to doubling since the "ban."
NOW tell the victims that banning or licensing saves lives.....
It's also interesting to note that the Home Office DON'T KNOW
how many legitimate shooters there are in England and Wales, and they DON'T KNOW what all the guns
are that are licensed - a quarter of them are described as "Other" - and when asked, they haven't got an answer.
(I suspect a good number of them are sound moderators.)
FIREARM AND SHOTGUN CERTIFICATE RENEWALS (10/03/09)
Due to the change years ago of Firearm and Shotgun certificate life from three years to five years, there have been two years in which police firearms licensing staff
have had very few renewals to deal with - and 2008 and 2009 were two of those years.
Now in 2011 we have returned to the normal amount of renewals, and we are beginning to see long delays in the renewal process in some police force areas.
To avoid any problems, suggest that you get YOUR renewal application in as
soon as possible to give the firearms departments a chance, BUT
If they are inefficent or unhelpful (most are both helpful AND efficient) let your shooting organisation
know so that they can help.
If you are renewing your FIREARM certificate, please ask your referees to send in their forms WITHIN THE WEEK after
you have given them to them - this will also help.
Remember to check the SIZE of the envelope you're
sending the form in - it may well need extra postage, and if you don't put the right stamps on it, the police
can hardly be expected to pay the excess as well as collecting it! It's YOUR responsibility.
We have heard of several people being prosecuted for making mistakes on the forms,
so be VERY careful.
If you are a member of a shooting organisation why not ring them for help with the (extremely badly designed)
forms? It's what you pay them for..... !
There's a link above left and also below where you can download the forms, as well as help with their completion.
CERTIFICATE APPLICATION FORMS AND GUIDANCE
(20/09/09)
If you go to
Certificate Application forms and guidance you'll find a link to the forms needed for Firearm and Shotgun certificates- renewals, grants or variations.
Well that's quite useful, but far more helpfully you'll also find a series of notes which
will help you through the process.
These notes have been complied from years of experience, as well as from information from police forces and
the Home Office, so we hope you find them helpful with the confusing, complex and obscure wording of Firearms forms.
PROMOTE YOUR CLUB
(24/6/09)
We believe it's important that people who are not shooters come to see that our sport is simply that - a sport - along with the likes of local darts, football, rugby etc.
One of the ways of doing this is to get into your local newspapers by sending them the results of various competitions for publication on their sports pages;
Local newspapers are always looking for this sort of thing.
Some newspaper groups offer web space to local clubs and societies - and this is another way of getting "local" shooting
into the public conciousness.
We use two such facilities - Communigate - Cheshire,
and
The Wirral Globe, and combined with the occasional e-mail fax or letter
to the other local newspapers, it has put us - if not on a par with - at least in amongst the local sports.
This also had the effect of attracting the attention of the sports reporter of the largest regional paper in the North-West - see
Daily Post Article.
TEN YEARS AFTER.... (Updated 12/10/09)
HOME OFFICE PRESS RELEASE- 079/98 27 February 1998
GOVERNMENT KEEPS ITS PROMISE AS HANDGUN SURRENDER IS COMPLETED
The Government fulfilled its pledge to remove all handguns from the streets of Britain today [emphasis added]
as the final phase of
firearms surrender came to a close.
The remaining legally owned handguns were being handed in to police throughout February as today's deadline approached.
Welcoming the end of the hand-in period, Home Office Minister Alun Michael said:
"We have now held a successful firearms surrender for large and small calibre handguns, which I believe has put a firm brake on the development of a dangerous gun culture in the UK.
"Today's deadline for surrender of small calibre pistols completes the Government's drive to take all handguns out of general civilian circulation.
"It should be remembered that in 1996, 294 pistols were either stolen or obtained via fraud. A total ban reduces this risk and prevents legally held handguns falling into the wrong hands.
"I thank the police for ensuring that both hand-in periods have been handled successfully and professionally. I would also like to thank handgun owners who have co-operated in the hand-in arrangements.
I understand that many firearms owners feel aggrieved with the recent changes in the law but appreciate their co-operation in carrying the new law into effect, despite their personal feelings on the matter.
"I would also urge the public to contact either their local police or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 with any information they may have concerning illegally held guns."
NOW...... see below.
Pistol Facts (18/07/08)
In 1998/1999 when the ban on legally-held pistols was brought in, 10.1% of injuries caused by the illegal use of firearms were caused by
pistols. Now, the Home Office figures (2007/2008)show that the proportion has more than
DOUBLED - to 26.3%.*
AND.....
"It should be remembered that in 1996, 294 pistols were either stolen or obtained via fraud. A total ban reduces
this risk and prevents legally held handguns falling into the wrong hands."
BUT....... in 1997, 305 handguns were stolen, and then in 1997/8, 270 handguns were
stolen - AFTER "all" handguns had been banned from legal possession.

MERSEYSIDE POLICE SHOOTERS FORUM AGREEMENT (20/7/08)
Merseyside Police shooters forum have been meeting for some time now, and one of the interesting things to come
from these meetings has been an agreemnt in the form of a
"best practice guidance" document.
This is a form of agreement between the clubs, Registered Firearms Dealers and Merseyside Police - worth reading!
LEGALLY HELD FIREARMS USED IN CRIME? LITTLE RISK OF THAT, SAY THE HOME OFFICE.
In a written answer to a question posed by James Brokenshire MP, The minister of state for Crime and Policing
- Tony McNulty replied that it was estimated that there was little risk of legally-held firearms being used in
crime, so they had decided NOT to link the computerised firearms licensing system to the National Ballistics
Intelligence Service Database.

And to back it up...........
This is an EXCELLENT site which helps everyone to contact their MP by letter,
e-mail ,fax and 'phone - WELL worth a visit - and well worth using,
particularly in the light of Bill Wiggins' comments. Just enter your postcode
to get details of your MP, and how to contact him or her.

There is also a very easy to use e-mail form to help you.
You should try the form below - its brevity belies its great power! Just try
typing - say - "Firearms Licensing" into the "Search Parliament" box.....
You can even set it up to send you an e-mail when those words are used in Parliament!
The LIVERPOOL DAILY POST sports supplement published a
two page, centre spread article on PSA
Why not approach your local newspaper's sports reporter and get him or her to come along to a shooting session?
It's another way of showing that the shooting sports are simply another form of sport - not the bunch of murdering
red-neck paedophiles some would believe us to be. This form of "grass roots" promotion of the sport is vital to our continued survival - and success!

The Police Officer's Guide to Shooters.
Sometimes, it's difficult for the police to differentiate between a law-abiding shooter and a criminal or terrorist.
Since few police officers are shooters any more - particularly after the
passing of the Firearms (Amendment)Act 1997 - BASC has produced
a leaflet to help; a sort of "Spotter's Guide to shooters."
You can read it for yourself at
The Police Officer's Guide to shooters - but you will need Adobe Acrobat to view it.
FIREARM SECURITY
The FIREARM SECURITY HANDBOOK 2005
has now been properly implemented on the Home Office Website - including all the illustrations which were missing for so long.
Now everyone can access the document to see exactly what the advice on security of firearms
really means!
